Subject: RE: SSA - FEEDBACK ON USE OF MATERIALS, TOOLS AND REPORTS
Dear Joseph,
Many thanks to you, FAO and the partner (ECO) for the Seed Security Assessment tools and training materials developed and Seed Security Assessment trainings offered through the capacity building project (OSRO/GLO/303/EC). This has not only built a cadre of SSA experts in South Sudan but also improved the design of seed interventions particularly in Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap states of South Sudan.
Using the SSA tools and training materials, I successfully led a seed security assessment in Warrap state and also participated in similar assessment in Northern Bahr el Gazal state. The SSA in Warrap and Northern Bahr el Ghazal state was aimed to:
* Critically and constructively review past emergency and rehabilitation seed-aid related activities in Warrap and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states to provide lessons learnt
* Assess the prevailing seed security situation (availability, access, quality and varietal suitability) among varied types of farmers, including women and youth within the agro-ecological systems in the state
* Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the different seed sources via the SSCF Matrix and identify opportunities to correct specific weaknesses
* Provide a comprehensive information base (report) on which to design appropriate seed system support intervention linked to promoting agricultural growth and seed security
The training materials and facilitation skills acquired were successfully use to conduct training for County Agriculture Department and NGO extension agents on seed inspection and seed quality control as recommended by SSA in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state. The training helped to:
* Enhance knowledge & skills on basic principles of community based seed production among CAD and NGO extension agents
* Understand the Seed Security Conceptual Frame Work to ensure Seed quality control and seed inspection
FAO 2014, Seed Security Assessment Report, Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, South Sudan has been useful in informing community based seed production and seed bulking intervention in Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap state. The report emphasizes Accountability to the Affected Population (AAP) which has also positively influence introduction of new draught resistant crop varieties to the draught prone region of South Sudan.
Humanitarian interventions in South Sudan are predominant emergency response to both natural and man-made crises, in this text the SSA tools and training materials remain useful in South Sudan.
Thank you
Kind regards
Lita

Subject: SSA - FEEDBACK ON USE OF MATERIALS, TOOLS AND REPORTS
Dear all,
FAO through the EHO funded capacity building project (OSRO/GLO/303/EC) developed a number of SSA tools, training materials and supported SSA training and field work in South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia Ethiopia and Uganda in the horn of Africa
1. Who has ever used the SSA tools and training materials independently without my support? And how useful have these tools and training materials been to your organization in designing or improving your seed security/food security program?
2. If you have ever had access to any of the SSA reports - how useful has it been in improving the design of your intervention in your country, state or county?
Regards,
Joseph Okidi
