Dear Colleagues,

I trust all is well with you,

The Ugandan scenario is common in the Horn of Africa especially in countries where Seed Aid is a major source of seeds and it is indeed a vice that require consolidated effort to eliminate. I trust, this forum is capable of influencing or even leading the fight using SSA as an entry point. Thanks to Joseph for sharing with us what happened in Nebi, I would be grateful to know how similar situations have been addressed in other locations.

Dear Joseph, I would appreciate if you could lead us in the fight beyond seed security assessment.

Thank you, miss you all

Best Regards

Lita

Dear Joseph,

Well done for pointing these out in this forum. Its high time the relevant authorities moved with speed to seize the seeds from distributors and even the farmers who have not yet planted. With the rains most farmers will fall victim to these.

Regards

Erick

Dear Mwanga,

It is good that KSC is taking some actions and it fits well within our SSA recommendations. I hope other seed companies regions will rise up to challenge and address them.

Regards,

Joseph

Dear Joseph,

Thanks for sharing this unfortunate situation. Fake seed distribution or sales is becoming a big all time scandal and I thank the action taken by authority in NEBBI district, Uganda. I also saw in one of Kenya’s Main Television media house (Citizen) news bulletin at 9.00 PM on 13th May 2015 a managing director (MD) of Kenya seed company (KSC) insinuating that for every 10 packets of seeds sold, 4 are fake. The KSC MD indicated that the company has introduced short text message (SMS) for tracking genuine seed lots/packets.. I hope the number to be used for SMS will be corrupt proof. The MD was also very much concern about low penalties for fake seeds which does not discourage the practice

Subject: Poor Quality Seeds being Distriibuted in Uganda

Dear all,

It is unfortunate that in the horn of Africa, some government don’t care about the fate of famers by delivering poor quality seed. This is currently happening in my country (Ugandan) and I feel sorry for the poor famers – read more at http://www.monitor.co.ug/News/National/Nebbi-leaders-reject-10-tonnes-of-beans/-/688334/2715662/-/i0f9tez/-/index.html

We must all rise up to fight this vice.

Regards,

Joseph Okidi
