FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
Livestock play an important role in countries of Central and South Asia in relation to boosting nutrition but also by helping to improve livelihoods, particularly those of small holders and their families. Outbreaks of animal diseases like foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) are a constant threat to both better nutrition and farmers’ incomes. As these diseases can spread rapidly and across national borders, there is an urgent call for greater cross-border collaboration to prevent and control transboundary animal diseases (TADs)...[Read more<http://www.fao.org/asiapacific/news/detail-events/en/c/1069560/>]

FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia
Wild boar are playing the main role in spreading African swine fever across Europe. Learning how to limit or stop this vector of infection is the central topic of an FAO workshop opening today in Kaunas, Lithuania. African swine fever is a viral disease of pigs and wild boar that presents as a haemorrhagic fever and results in up to 100 percent mortality of infected animals. It carries no human health risks, but can have immense socio-economic, trade, and food security consequences...[Read more<http://www.fao.org/europe/news/detail-news/en/c/1069049/>]

[cid:image040.jpg@01D369FD.58E1ED00]Highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza in 2016 and early 2017 - Observations and future perspectives
During 2016-2017 novel strains of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus within the Goose/Guangdong/96 (Gs/GD/96)-lineage (mainly H5N8) caused multiple outbreaks of disease in poultry and wild birds across much of Europe, parts of Asia, the Middle East and West Africa, and have extended for the first time to affect poultry in Eastern and Southern Africa. The virus was reported first in the Tyva Republic in late May 2016 before being detected elsewhere. This was the fourth intercontinental wave of transmission by an H5 virus within this lineage and was by far the most severe in terms of the number of countries affected. This Focus On summarises observations from the fourth intercontinental wave associated with Gs/GD/96-lineage viruses as well as information on other related H5 viruses spreading in 2016-2017. It provides information on the genetics of these viruses, some discussion on the likely progress of the current intercontinental wave and guidance for forecasting future waves...[Download Full PDF<http://www.fao.org/3/a-i8068e.pdf>]

Rinderpest is a highly contagious disease that, throughout history, has resulted in the mortality of hundreds of millions of livestock and has caused significant disruption and damage to agricultural supply chains throughout the world. FAO, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and regional partners implemented the Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme, which brought an end to the disease in 2011. Rinderpest is the first animal disease to be eradicated worldwide...[Download Full PDF<http://www.fao.org/3/a-i8228e.pdf>]
[cid:image042.jpg@01D369FD.58E1ED00]Chinese-origin H7N9 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
The ability of the H7N9 HPAI virus to infect both humans and poultry raises concern about a possible influenza pandemic and international spread either due to poultry or through wild birds. With the aim to provide sound and up-to-date scientific information for decision-makers globally, a qualitative risk assessment was conducted addressing the potential spread of H7N9 HPAI to unaffected provinces of China, other countries in South-East Asia and beyond during the period May to September 2017, as well as human exposure in affected areas of China where H7N9 HPAI has been reported. Several pathways of virus incursion were considered. Risk assessment is a powerful tool for supporting decision makers and national veterinary authorities to take scientifically sound decision based on the risk-levels assigned. Consequences of H7N9 HPAI can impact livelihoods, food security and poverty in rural areas, extended to all actors involved in poultry value chains. The impact is exacerbated by the public health risk related to this zoonotic virus...[Download Full PDF<http://www.fao.org/3/a-i7611e.pdf>]
