[cid:image003.jpg@01D072E2.B82210C0]Emergency cattle vaccination campaign underway along Syria-Lebanon border

Concerns over the spread of high impact transboundary animal diseases are mounting in Lebanon and neighbouring countries as some of the 1.5 million refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria have brought with them large numbers of unvaccinated sheep, goats, cattle, and other animals, FAO warned today. The Organization is now carrying out the second phase of a campaign to immunize as much of the country's livestock as possible, with a target of vaccinating all animals. This is, however, expected to be difficult to achieve because of...[Read more<http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/282808/icode/>]

Following the recent H5N1 outbreaks in Western Africa since late December 2014, FAO, through the Crisis Management Centre-Animal Health (CMC-AH), has recently deployed rapid assessment missions, in the Republic of Benin, from 22 to 28 February 2015, and in the Togolese Republic, from 1 to 7 March 2015. Both missions were requested to assess the level of preparedness and response capacities of both countries towards a potential H5N1 incursion. Worldwide campaign aims for complete eradication of Peste de Petits Ruminants by 2030

High-level authorities from 15 countries pledged on Thursday to collaborate on a global plan to wipe out forever the devasting animal disease known as 'Peste des petits ruminants' by 2030, a lethal plague for goats and sheep and the scourge of rural households in vast swathes of the developing world. Ministerial delegations, along with more than 300 participants from across the continents, representatives of regional bodies and international organizations, agreed to a plan to control and eradicate PPR drawn up by FAO and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and presented at a meeting organized by the two institutions with the Government of Cote d'Ivoire....[Read more<http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/282397/icode/>]

[cid:image009.jpg@01D072E2.B82210C0]FAO/OIE Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of PPR

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious disease of sheep and goats caused by a Morbillivirus closely related to rinderpest virus and is considered to be one of the most damaging livestock diseases in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Bearing in mind the strong negative impact that PPR can have on food security and the livelihoods of poor farmers, the main keepers of sheep and goats, the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) Global Steering Committee in 2012, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) Council and the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), in the form of a Resolution of the World Assembly of Delegates of the OIE in 2014, have all recommended the development of a PPR Global Control and Eradication Strategy (hereinafter named 'Global Strategy') and expressed a strong willingness to address the animal health problems in a systematic way, dealing with horizontal as well as more disease-specific (vertical) issues...

[cid:image011.jpg@01D072E2.B82210C0]Global Control and Eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants. Investing in Veterinary Systems, Food Security and Poverty Alleviation - Advocacy document

This advocacy document outlines why investing in the control and eradication of peste des petits ruminants is an investment in food security. Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious disease affecting sheep and goats, causes a staggering USD 1.45 billion to USD 2.1 billion in losses each year. PPR affects the livelihoods of more than 330 million of the world's poorest people in over 70 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Eradicating PPR will help improve food security, nutrition, incomes and livelihood resilience of millions of poor farmers around the world. In response to calls from member countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health have taken the lead in developing a Global Strategy for the control and eradication of PPR. By making an overall investment of USD 7.1 billion, PPR can be eradicated within 15 years...
