Dear all,
This email message has two important pieces of information.

1. Launch of a Directory on edible insects. If you are working on rearing and use of insects as animal feed and willing to be a part of the Global Directory, please contact Mr. [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> . Further information on the Directory is given below.

2. FAO and University of Wageningen and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) is organizing an International Conference on Insects to Feed the World. One session will be devoted to Use of Insects as Animal feed.

1.    Launching of FAO’s  “ Global Stakeholder Directory on Edible Insects “   ( http://www.fao.org/forestry/edibleinsects/84630/en/)

This directory lets stakeholders present their current and past work on insects as feed and food. It also enables users to identify synergies on cross cutting topics such as: nutrition, livestock management, legislation, labelling and investment while facilitating networking at regional/national levels.
To find stakeholders in the various sectors covered, users can click either the top navigation bar by pressing on the buttons to filter their search or they can also zoom in for displaying more contacts.
Please take note that this is a first version, in which some 100 stakeholders are visible (following their explicit request) out of a total of some 400+ available in our database. We plan to regularly update this Directory, including by increasing the number of contacts as well as by adding more options to facilitate your search needs.

Identification and contacting stakeholders and other activities in the animal feed sector is done in close collaboration with FAO’s  Livestock Production and Systems Branch at the Animal Production and Health Division (with thanks to Harinder P.S. Makkar and Philippe Ankers);
Websites:  http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/home/en/index.htm;    http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/resources/en/pubs_aprod.html#3

We strongly encourage user feedback on our directory, invite you to join this Directory and to share this link with your friends and colleagues.

2. International conference on Insects to Feed the World

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) organize a conference “Insects to feed the world”, 14-17 May 2014 in the Netherlands.<http://www.wageningenur.nl/en/show/Insects-to-feed-the-World.htm> The conference will discuss the potential of insects as a protein source both for human consumption and as animal feed stock.

The conference will bring together relevant partners from the food and feed sector, government officials, academia, and private sector representatives from both developing and developed countries. It can be a turning point and provide a framework and a roadmap to develop a new food and feed sector that can contribute to more sustainable global food security. With all stakeholders we will plan the way forward.

We invite you to participate in activities such as oral and poster presentations, discussion groups, and symposia. Prominent experts from diverse backgrounds will update us about the newest developments. All attendants are welcome to actively participate in the various activities, including the excursions to be organized during the last day to scientific institutes, private enterprises and the catering industry.

The early bird registration fee is €450 and students €250 (euro) – up to 31st of January 2014. The fee covers access to all sessions, lunches, coffee breaks, a dinner, conference material and excursions.

The programme - comprising all aspects of insects as food and feed – can be found on the website. Please, register here: http://www.wageningenur.nl/en/show/Insects-to-feed-the-World.htm. On the registration form, you can indicate whether you prefer to present your work as an oral or a poster presentation.

In preparation for this Conference, FAO and Wageningen UR made an exhaustive compilation and critical review of available literature and data covering the many issues involved for using insects for food and/or feed. The comprehensive report “Edible Insects: prospects of insects as food and feed<http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/i3253e/i3253e00.htm>” can be downloaded.
