Why it matters to reduce the use of antimicrobials in animal production and how the feed sector can contribute.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat of increasing concern for human and animal health. AMR causes antimicrobial treatments to be ineffective, increases human and animal mortality, and results in more severe or prolonged illnesses and production losses in agriculture. Inappropriate and excessive use of antimicrobials, in both human health care and in the agricultural sector, speeds up the development of micro-organisms resistant to said substances. Antimicrobials are used in animal production to preserve animal and public health, but often also for inappropriately preventing disease or as growth promoters. Decreasing the use of antimicrobials in animal production can contribute to contain AMR. How?
