Dear All

I think we need to work simultaneously on following three thematic areas to
successfully plan, implement and eradicate PPR from the globe:

1) Prevent PPR from occurring or re-occurring through prevention and
effective communication while ensuring community involvement and One Health
approach at a regional and national level;

. Regional vaccine bank will be important.

2) Detect PPR early and respond quickly

. Countries may adopt a targeted approach for disease search in
populations at higher risk eg wild life and those basic epidemiology units
which are known infected for interventions especially for mass vaccination
followed by vaccination of young (>6 months) small ruminants. The other
basic epi units may be subjected to risk based disease freedom surveys
followed by intervention deemed appropriate;

. In addition to rapid and confirmatory tests, a network of
laboratories at national & regional level may also be identified and
integrate them with epidemiology units to follow a uniform case definition.

. Appropriate mechanism (as we have RSU for SAARC countries) should
be in place to enhance epidemiology/diagnostic capacity;

3) Reduce direct and indirect impacts of PPR

. Advocacy for Policy makers at national level to allocate resources
for epidemiological services.

. Institutionalize the Epidemiology services in the national /
sub-national framework with the mandate to generate evidences for policy as
well as operational decisions.
