Dear Moderator

We wish to take this opportunity to thank all the participants in this conference for raising and sharing information on how we might proceed in addressing the PPR control and eradication globally, regionally and Nationally. Looking at the issue of PPR through the Regional economic communities is one way of tackling the disease in a coordinated and harmonised manner and as  Chris  observes  RECs provide themselves with the necessary leadership in livestock agenda. However, a lot of overlap among the RECS exists and  the African Union technical Office, AU-IBAR  considers  PPR  disease control  in Africa through the  five  geographical regions/ecosystems of Africa  (Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern and Western). Therefore AU-IBAR is well placed to coordinate and Harmonise activities across the different geographical/ ecosystems to limit the spread of PPR and protect the remaining PPR free countries in Northern and Southern Africa. The
content of the  ‘control basket’ will be based on geographical peculiarities . AU-IBAR is currently implementing an approach in the Greater Horn of Africa to support coordination and harmonisation of PPR and other trade related  diseases.  This geographical  approach on   the implementation of standardized Measures and interventions  in the region will benefit IGAD, EAC and  part of COMESA member States. It is intended to expand the approach across the continent.
