Report of the First Session of the

Committee on Agriculture's Sub-Committee on Livestock

(16–18 March 2022)

Livestock plays a key role for achieving the 2030 Agenda, with its contribution towards food security and nutrition, sustainable livelihoods and reducing poverty. The Committee on Agriculture (COAG) Sub-Committee on Livestock (Sub-Committee), an intergovernmental forum, was established to discuss and build consensus on all livestock issues holistically.

The Sub-Committee held its First Session in virtual mode from 16–18 March 2022 with

Dr QU Dongyu, the FAO Director-General opening the session. It was attended by more than
600 delegates representing 133 FAO Member Nations and Non-Governmental and Intergovernmental organizations from across the world.

The First Session featured discussions on a range of topics linked directly and indirectly with all of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and FAO's work on livestock aligned to the Strategic Framework 2022-31. Contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable agrifood systems, nutrition and healthy diets; Good practices to sustainably enhance the productivity of small-scale livestock producers; Integrating the livestock sector into national climate actions by considering its adaptation and resilience to climate change, and contribution to biodiversity and ecosystem services; Strengthening national coordinated capacities to manage the risks of animal diseases and emerging zoonoses through the One Health approach; Progress towards the eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants; Alternative feed practices to promote responsible use of antimicrobials, along with other matters were deliberated and advised upon at the First Session of the Sub-Committee.
