-------------------

Small ruminants (goat and sheep) are the primary livestock of many low-income, food-deficient households. Small ruminants are reared within a variety of production systems, adding value to land. Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious disease of wild and domestic small ruminants caused by a Morbillivirus (family Paramyxoviridae). PPR threatens the food security and sustainable livelihood of farmers across Africa, the Middle East and Asia which are home to some 80 % of the world's 2.5 billion small ruminants. PPR has direct impact on over 300 million families who rely on small ruminants and the global yearly economic impact is estimated at approximately $2,1 billion USD. PPR continues to emerge in new regions of the world, and in other places, it is becoming entrenched and endemic due to challenges associated with control measures, despite the disease being targeted for eradication by 2030 by FAO and OIE. This webinar will hone in on the socio-economic impacts of PPR in select countries in Africa, consider the implications for PPR eradication and provide information about approaches being taken by the socio-economic thematic group of the PPR Global Research & Expertise Network.
