Cactus pear (Opuntia spp) is an underutilized crop originating from Mexico. Due to climate change and extreme weather conditions particularly in arid and semi-arid countries experiencing prolonged drought, interest in the crop for human consumption as well as animal fodder is increasing. Opuntia can be used to restore degraded land, and can contribute to a more resilient crop-livestock system.
A new book “Crop ecology, cultivation and uses of cactus pear” will be launched during this event. The book captures the latest knowledge on cactus pear, with contributions from experts around the world on the occasion of the IX International Congress on Cactus Pear and Cochineal (Coquimbo, Chile, March 2017), building on the first edition of the FAO book published in 1995. The book has been in demand in countries such as Algeria, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Zimbabwe in Africa, and India and Pakistanin Asia. Mediterranean countries and South American countries are also increasing production areas. For example, Brazil now has the largest cactus production area of close to 600 000ha for forage production, which is increasing rapidly as the country is experiencing extreme drought. In Ethiopia, Opuntia is saving the people and livestock when all other crops fail. Various species of the Opuntia genus can be found in many countries, where it is sometimes considered as invasive species, but is not used. Madagascar is another country where the plant is widely spread, and where they are just beginning to explore use as fodder.
