FAO Survey on Good practices in the Food and Agricultural Sector

What is the objective of this survey?
This survey aims at collecting good practices in the food and agricultural sector, available around the world, and from all possible stakeholders, to identify those that have an impact on containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its transmission. The survey should result in a collection of guidance material already available and in identifying what guidance is still missing and need to be produced.

Who should reply?
We encourage all stakeholders working in food and agriculture sectors, on a local, regional, national or international level, to fill out this short survey, by 15 April 2017.

It takes only 5 minutes to fill out the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/goodpracticesamr

Background
FAO is preparing guidance documents to assist with the application of good practices in food and agriculture sectors to prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance. Good practices in food and agriculture are those applied in animal (terrestrial and aquatic) and plant production, animal health, welfare, nutrition and husbandry, plant protection, waste management, and post production as well as other relevant fields, which help to ensure the production of safe and high quality agricultural products in a sustainable manner.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat of increasing concern for human and animal health. AMR causes antimicrobial treatments to be ineffective, increases human and animal mortality, and results in more severe or prolonged illnesses and production losses in agriculture. Inappropriate and excessive use of antimicrobials in both human health care and in the agricultural sector speeds up the process of micro-organisms developing resistance to antimicrobial substances, such as antibiotics. For instance, antimicrobials are used in animal production to preserve animal and public health, but often also for disease prevention purposes and as growth promoters.
The application of good practices along the whole value chain of food and agriculture products improves animal and plant health and increases their productivity. Therefore, it reduces the need to use antimicrobials and, in turn, may contribute to the prevention and control AMR. Good practices are also essential to minimize the spread of antimicrobials and resistant micro-organisms into the environment.

Thank you for participating in this survey. Your feedback is important and data will be handled confidentially.
