Demand for animal protein is expected to outpace production in developing countries in particular Small Island Developing States (SIDS) leaving these countries vulnerable to the effects of malnutrition. Increasing animal production based primarily on expansion and intensification have not achieved the desired effect on food security and nutrition. In contrary, they have negative effects on the environment and results in inequality of the agriculture sector.

Farm management that applies agro-ecological principles holds the potential to sustainably increase livestock production while protecting and enhancing the ecological and socio-economic environments. Management practices that decrease external inputs and pollution, improve animal productivity and health, maintain and support biological diversity, utilize indigenous knowledge provides the best potential for SIDS to produce animal source foods in addition to a range of other services and products.

This seminar/webinar will present possible management principles and practices that can be introduced in already existing agricultural production systems. A case study of how agro-ecology can contribute to a more sustainable integrated production will be showcased.
