Dear Members,

Thank you all for joining the FAO Livestock Technical Network; we are now over 200 from the most diverse FAO offices and projects, all somehow with a relation to livestock.

THE NETWORK

FAO’s new Strategic Framework and Medium Term Plan provide for Technical Networks to be established along main disciplinary lines as an instrument to maintain and strengthen the technical capacities of the Organization’s human resources, as well as exchanging information, knowledge and ideas.

Among the above mentioned, the Livestock Technical Network focuses on the theme of Livestock Production and Health. It is a community of FAO professionals, engaged in collective learning and knowledge sharing, and it is open to all interested FAO professionals.

The Network aims at providing a structured platform to exchange thematic information, knowledge and ideas, as well as fostering discussions and collaborations on specific topics and thematics. It intends to keep FAO staff informed, knowledgeable and inspired by relevant disciplinary developments, both internal and external to FAO. The Network has a flexible structure that may evolve and change in response to the curiosities, knowledge needs and learning interests of its members.

The objective of the Network is to offer an environment where members are able to exchange theme-specific knowledge and ideas including:
o	Sharing, discussing and documenting innovative concepts, technologies, and practices that have been developed by FAO, or with the participation of external participants and experts;
o	Organizing and participating in thematic work directed to the development of a normative technical concept, technology or practice  (including policies, strategies and programmes);
o	Engaging in knowledge sharing and peer support, to keep abreast of thematic developments over time, with the assistance of appropriate virtual platforms and face-to-face meetings.

The Network aims to ensure FAO’s intellectual leadership in livestock related issues. Furthermore, we intend to enable the Organization to comply better with its mandate of contributing to the sustainable development of the livestock sector, along with increasing food security and poverty reduction. The Network supports the in-house harmonization of strategies, approaches and programmes addressing the development of the livestock sector across SOs. Overall, its activities may include: resolving problems, providing information, seeking the experiences and opinions of peers, sharing technical documents and other knowledge resources, developing new partnerships, identifying knowledge gaps and discussing ideas for normative products and services.

THE WORKSPACE

We have created a dedicated workspace for the Network at https://home.fao.org/cop/ftn/lpvs/SitePages/,DanaInfo=workspace.fao.org+Home.aspx .The Workspace is a technical platform, which enables teamwork and collaboration. Its goals are reached through easier communication, sharing and retrieving of documents and information, along with record keeping of activities. This Network space serves as a central location for all its members to share documents, issues, contacts, announcements, Web links and calendars. Please, use this workspace as much as possible for the benefit of all Network members and for the quality of our work.
