This series of webinars is aimed at the EARLN (Eastern Africa reference Laboratories Network) and the EAREN (Eastern Africa Regional Epidemiology Network) and those with an interest in FMD control in East Africa. The present webinar is the fifth of the main series, which focusses on practical aspects, country experience and real examples, involving international and national experts from different countries and allowing discussions and facilitating sharing of experience on dedicated topics.

This month, we will discuss Biosafety and biosecurity at all levels for FMD surveillance, control and eradication. Implementing biosecurity measures as standard practice helps ensure that those working with farm animals or coming into contact with them do not spread FMD when they enter or leave a premises. A biosecurity programme is based on plans, controls and actions which are focused on movement of animals, personnel and conveyances into and out of potenially infected areas, to avoid to avoid transmission of infection.   *   Dr. Eunice Chepkwony - Deputy Director of Veterinary Services with the Kenya Government’s State Department of Livestock
  *   Dr. Valerie Mioulet - Head of the Virology Section within the WRLFMD

Dr Kirsten Tjørnehøj is involved since 2007 in Veterinary Biosafety and Biosecurity with focus on high containment facilities for FMDV. She is a National expert for FVO and member of EuFMD BioRisk Management Group and has a solid experience in virology (1995-to date) including pathogenesis studies and diagnostics, focus on FMDV, SVDV, rabies, BRSV with experience also of field work in East Africa supervising capacity building projects for FMDV (2006-2015, DANIDA-funded, Uganda and Kenya) and testing vaccines against tickborne diseases. (1992-1994, APO for FAO, Malawi).
Dr. Eunice Chepkwony is a Veterinarian working as Deputy Director of Veterinary Services with the Kenya Government’s State Department of Livestock and currently based in National FMD Reference Lab. Embakasi. She has 25 years of experience at various Regional labs in Kenya on Lab diagnosis, Surveillance and Disease Investigation. She is also a Bio-risk Management Trainer (trained by Sandia National Labs USA). She has participated in FMD Real-Time training courses in Nakuru, Kenya as a Logistic Planner and Trainer since 2009 to-date.  She is currently a PhD student at University of Nairobi carrying out research on FMD viruses in Kenya.
Dr. Valerie Mioulet has a long standing career on high containment labs (up to BSL4) on both human and animal pathogens, handling agents such as rinderpest, FMDV, CCHF, Ebola, Lassa, H5N1 HPAI  and therefore with a keen interest in all aspects of biosafety. ​
