Women and Forests: Improving food and nutrition security in Burkina Faso
In Burkina Faso, women are increasing their knowledge about the nutritional value of forest products and run effective community-based enterprises with the help of an FAO project.
Women in Burkina Faso rely traditionally on forest products for a variety of purposes: from food to medicines, from clothing to tools and manufacturing of dyes. Non-wood forest products can contribute to improve the lives and incomes of rural women; they also can be used during the drought season to replace the cereals intake as well as throughout the year to complement nutritional deficiencies.
In 2009, FAO with BFA Ministry of Environment and BFA Agency for the Promotion of Non-Wood Forest Products have established a national project which has helped women to increase their income and improve their food and nutrition security. From 8 000 totally reached people, 89 percent were women. All received training on nutritional value and use of forest products, including effective running of forest product enterprises. 238 specialized associations have trained women in a variety of processing techniques: from the extraction of neem and shea butter oil for cosmetics, to the processing of baobab and saba for food.
