Stories from the countries

'Cocoa production in Ghana is not a significant cause of deforestation" says GhaFFaP

[cid:image008.jpg@01D79808.E19C0DA0]Members of the Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Producers produce one fifth of the country's cocoa. They call for a change to unfavourable tree tenure regimes which are contributing to deforestation. Their voice needs to be heard.

On your marks, get set, cocoa!

Indigenous peoples are key to facing the current planetary emergency

[cid:image012.jpg@01D79808.E19C0DA0]

Indigenous territories in the Bolivian, Brazilian and Colombian Amazon avoid between 42.8 million and 59.7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. To commemorate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, David Kaimowitz explains why it's time to join forces with indigenous peoples for the good of the planet.

Co-producing knowledge that responds to the needs of local forest communities

[cid:image013.jpg@01D79808.E19C0DA0]

A recent study calls for a switch from traditional to co-produced methods of knowledge generation as the best way to help grassroots organizations prosper and champion sustainable forests. Over 40 grassroots organizations from six countries took part in the knowledge demand survey.

The Brooklyn Bridge needs a makeover. Is rainforest lumber still in style?

[cid:image014.jpg@01D79808.E19C0DA0]

Last year, a proposal to replace the Brooklyn Bridge's walkway with wooden planks sourced from a Guatemalan rainforest won a City Council-sponsored competition. Some environmentalists in New York say the proposal is misguided, and that creating any demand for tropical hardwood is a mistake no matter where it's sourced from.

[cid:image016.jpg@01D79808.E19C0DA0]The FFF Steering Committee met on 15th July to review the mid-term evaluation of the programme. Overall, feedback on the programme was very positive, especially in light of all the challenges farmers have faced over the past year as a result of COVID-19.
