Dear readers,

The October 2012 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that the number of hungry and undernourished people in the region is 532 million according to FAO's report State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012.Stunting, which results from undernutrition, is still a serious problem in Asia.

Domestic food prices were largely stable in the region, while global food prices edged up by 1.4 percent. Viet Nam is enjoying strong harvest of coffee and rice. Myanmar has reduced is rice production forecast for this year, while Thailand's prime minister has vowed to continue her government's rice support programme.
