Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

On Wednesday 11 December, we celebrate International Mountain Day. This year's theme is 'Mountains matter for youth', which aims to encourage young people to demand greater attention, investment, and tailored policies and research for mountains and mountain people.

To mark the day, the FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu spoke at a high-level event on mountain communities and climate change at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25) in Madrid, joined in the Chile Pavilion by the WMO Secretary General and speakers from mountain countries and organizations.

Meanwhile in Milan, Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi will first join a panel discussion with Italian writers, climbers and scientists to discuss how to support a global movement for mountains. In the evening, Einaudi will dedicate a concert and one of his compositions to mountains, whose fragile ecosystems are suffering from the effects of climate change. Einaudi will be nominated Mountain Partnership Goodwill Ambassador after the concert.

Also on Wednesday, the winner of the International Mountain Day mountain recipe photo contest<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/recipe-and-photo-contest/en/> will be announced. Over 70 recipes of mountain dishes were received from 27 countries.

Around the world, FAO country offices and Mountain Partnership members will be marking the day. To find out more about these events, and to download logos, fact sheets and presentations for teachers, please visit the International Mountain Day website<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/en/>.

If you are on social media, please help us celebrate the day by telling us why #MountainsMatter to you and by liking mountain tweets on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

A very happy International Mountain Day to all.

Sincerely,

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat
