Dear Members of the Mountain Partnership, dear Friends

The team at the Mountain Partnership Secretariat wishes to thank all of you for your commitment to sustainable mountain development and the important work done together during 2017.

We have achieved a lot this year. Thanks to the efforts of all of you, many significant activities have taken place at national and local level, engaging both governments, international organizations and civil society groups to keep up the momentum on mountains and ensure that they receive investments and political attention.

Over the year, we worked with several Mountain Partnership members with ECOSOC consultative statement to submit statements on behalf of mountain peoples and environments for various meetings at the United Nations level. Mountains were highlighted by several side events at the UNFCCC COP 23 in Bonn, Germany, including two organized within the framework of the Mountain Partnership. In collaboration with Slow Food, the second phase of the Mountain Partnership Products Initiative that aims to improve the livelihoods and economies of mountain communities was approved. The data produced for the Mountain Green Cover Index have been sent out to governments for validation. All these achievements led us to the successful fifth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, held on 11-13 December 2017 in Rome, Italy.

International Mountain Day (IMD) was a huge success with celebrations held all over the world. This year's IMD theme "Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger, migration" was also the theme of the Global Meeting which was attended by over 220 participants. The Framework for Action for implementing the 2030 Agenda in mountains was launched and endorsed at the meeting and a new steering committee was elected.

Furthermore, an editorial by Hiroto Mitsugi, Assistant Director-General, FAO, Mountains under pressure: climate change, hunger and migration, was prepared and published in the following media:

· Reuters<http://news.trust.org/item/20171210193914-06kmq> (United Kingdom)

· La Repubblica<http://www.repubblica.it/ambiente/2017/12/11/news/giornata_internazionale_delle_montagne-183801528/> (Italy)

This year, we wish to give special thanks to outgoing Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat Thomas Hofer, who has moved to Bangkok, Thailand as a Senior Forestry Officer of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The work he has done over the past five years has been remarkable and it enabled the Mountain Partnership to grow to the high point we reached today.

We look forward to your continued collaboration and sustained support to improve the livelihoods of mountain peoples and protect mountain environments around the world going into 2018. May the momentum we have all gained from the Global Meeting be motivation for a renewed and inspired effort.

Sending you mountainous wishes for the holiday season!

Happy New Year, Bonne année, Feliz año nuevo, Felice anno nuovo!<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLUnrUvMWCA&list=UUPbcO3Ai3oYkPQ7Q3tyZbtQ>
