Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

The third round of "informal informal" consultations on the draft outcome document for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) took place from 29 May to 2 June 2012 at UN Headquarters in New York.

Attached please find the latest version of the draft outcome document. Currently, there are 329 paragraphs in the text. Of these, 70 are agreed "ad referendum", leaving 259 paragraphs still to be agreed upon.

Mountain paragraphs can be found on page 38, 60 and 61.

Committed to mountains

At the closing session, Secretary General of Rio+20 Sha Zukang mentioned about twelve key deliverables<http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2012/envdev1284.doc.htm>, such as:



*         We can and will launch a process at Rio to define Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an essential feature of a post-2015 development framework;

*         We can agree to explore and share experiences and knowledge of green economy as tools for Sustainable Development and poverty eradication;

*         We need to have strong, action-oriented outcomes in priority areas in Section V - progress in food, gender, education;

*         Strong engagement of civil society and private sector will be crucial in implementing framework for action.



The Mountain Partnership Secretariat encourages you all to ensure sustainable mountain development is made a part of the future we want.


The Mountain Partnership at Rio+20

Rio+20 is truly a mega event; attracting over 50,000 participants and more than 130 Heads of State, it represents an unmatched opportunity to put mountains, their populations and the goods and services they provide at centre stage.



Mountains' global responses to the challenges of our era will be showcased by Mountain Partnership Members in the Mountain Pavilion, an innovative initiative led by Peru together with 35 associates.

Third Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership (19 June 2012)

The Third Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership will identify new, forward-looking objectives to place mountains at the heart of the post-Rio scenario in a holistic, inclusive and effective manner.

High level event on Mountains and Rio+20 (21 June 2012)

Using the unique platform provided to mountain countries and multilateral institutions by Rio+20 and the Mountain Pavilion, this event will promote solidarity and cooperation among all the stakeholders wishing to respond to mountain challenges in a holistic manner.

The Mountain Partnership meets the Small Island Partnership (22 June 2012)
The unique management challenges of mountainous islands will be discussed comparatively with those experienced by continental mountain regions. Specific challenges and potentials of sustainable management will be addressed, promoting the affiliation of mountainous island stakeholders to the Mountain Partnership.

On the side: listening to civil society

Sustainable Development Dialogues with Civil Society (16-19 June)



The Government of Brazil is organizing four days of dialogue events at the Rio Centro Convention Center, where up to 50,000 participants from civil society can connect and share ideas outside of the official UN programme. The aim is to generate innovative proposals for how sustainability can be applied to a range of issues, including: food security, poverty eradication, the economic crisis, sustainable energy for all; water; oceans; sustainable consumption and production; innovation and sustainable cities; unemployment, green jobs and migration.
