Bringing mountains to the forefront by leveraging the International Year of Mountains 2022 <https://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/events/event-detail/en/c/1608852/>
COP 27 Official Side Event – Hatshepsut Room
17 November 2022 | 18.30–20.00 (Sharm el-Sheikh time)

Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

The International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development<https://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/internationalyear2022/en/> is a unique opportunity to catalyse global action and build resilience of mountain communities and ecosystems to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Taking into consideration the urgent need to coordinate dialogue and foster alliances in these areas, mountain countries will gather to discuss how to increase political support for the conservation and restoration of mountain resources.

Considering the urgency of the environmental and climate crisis in mountainous regions and within the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, this session will discuss how to bring mountains to the forefront of international processes, in particular to the plenary discussion of future COPs. It will also consider recommendations committed to stepping-up climate action, to accelerate transformative and political momentum towards inclusive, resilient and sustainable mountain development.

Location: Hatshepsut

Date and time: 17 November 2022, 18.30 – 20.00

Session aims

· Share views about how to achieve political support for mountains at UNFCCC COPs and other international agreements, with a particular focus on how to bring mountains into the plenary discussion of future UNFCCC COPs, within the framework of the Mountain Partnerships Aspen Declaration, and how this leads to action.

· Discuss new roadmaps for action at the UN Conventions and for the next COP 28 in Dubai, in relation to advocacy and policy on climate change in mountains and sustainable development. Consider how existing gaps can be reduced.

· Present new and existing transboundary and regional mountain-related initiatives for mountain advocacy at international level and key learnings to support greater political cooperation.

· Establish a roadmap for action ahead of UNFCCC COP 28. In particular, how to involve the upcoming UNFCCC COP presidency (United Arab Emirates), how to coordinate their statement and participation in the SBSTA and SBI meetings that precede the UNFCCC COP.

Session speakers

· Pem Kamdel, Secretary, Ministry of Forests and Environment Government of Nepal (moderator)

· Elena Manaenkova, Deputy Secretary-General, World Meteorological Organization
