Dear Friends of the Mountain Partnership,

We wish to relay a message to you from Didier Bazile, a FAO visiting scientist from CIRAD (a French agricultural research and international cooperation organization), who has vast experience on quinoa in situ conservation and on farm management in the Andes, and has a number of proposals that may interest Mountain Partnership members.

He is currently working at FAO in the area of Neglected and Underutilized Crops and his contact information can be found below. During the International Year of Quinoa in 2013, he coordinated the book "State of the art report on quinoa around the world in 2013 (FAO/CIRAD)," involving more than 160 researchers from 22 countries in writing the 43 chapters of the book.

Considering the importance of sharing knowledge of mountains issues, he wishes to make the following concrete requests:

1. Joining the pilot collaborative network on quinoa cultivation
In order to facilitate permanent exchanges among those responsible for the trials on quinoa cultivation with other researchers, it appeared very important to develop a Pilot Collaborative Network on Quinoa. The pilot network was launched during a workshop in Ethiopia with 8 countries in November 2014, and there are now more than 70 key members representing more than 40 countries interested in quinoa development and connected with the key researchers from the 7 Andean countries. In order to go forward from this pilot network, resources to finance activities are needed. He can share with you a Concept Note with a first estimation of the provisional budget of 150.000 USD for all interested in supporting that initiative.

         2. Introducing the quinoa project to national authorities
Conservation of cultivated and wild biodiversity is a key issue in particular in mountains areas subject to important climate changes. Quinoa crop is a very important staple crop for many Andeans population who are also maintaining more than nine Quinoa Crop Wild Relatives genetically very closed to Chenopodium quinoa Willd. We can find them in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Another interesting point is that other chenopods, similar to quinoa, are also cultivated in the Himalayas for a long time with also on farm management to maintain local landraces. Quinoa experimentation in this area could be dangerous if we do not take into account this local biodiversity of Chenopods. A global project, with two regional centers in the Andes (Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina) and in the Himalayas (Bhutan, China, Nepal and India), could be submit to the GEF in the following topic: Sustainable Agriculture and Biodiversity. Members of the Mountain Partnership could really help us to enter in contact with national authorities of these countries, to identify the best partners and to develop the project.

       3. Supporting the translation of an essay on the dynamics of the global expansion of quinoa
After the scientific publication during the International Year of Quinoa and to discuss more in depth the large impact of quinoa expansion at world level, he published in March 2015 an essay with QUAE Editions in France. Please find here a presentation of the book:
Le quinoa, les enjeux d'une conquête

This book has been already translated in Spanish and will be published before the end of this year by LOM-Chile for diffusion. Some Arabic partners are also translating the book now and a negociation for publication is engaged with Egyptian Publishers. But he is now looking for donors in order to translate the book in English language to give it a wide diffusion in East Africa, Asia and North Europe & America. If your organization is interested in supporting this translation please contact Didier directly, the estimated total cost is about US$ 5000.

Best regards,
The Mountain Partnership Secretariat
