Dear Members of the Mountain Partnership, dear Friends
The team at the Mountain Partnership Secretariat wishes to thank all of you for your commitment to sustainable mountain development and the important work done together during 2016.
We have achieved a lot this year. Thanks to the efforts of all of you, many significant activities have taken place at national and local level, engaging both governments and civil society groups to keep up the momentum on mountains and ensure that they receive investments and political attention.
Over the year, we widely disseminated the results of the Vulnerability Study with events in New York, Washington, Berne and Rome. Thanks to the contribution of our members, we collated the United Nations Secretary General Report on Sustainable Mountain Development that has served as a basis for the UNGA Resolution which has been adopted a few days ago in New York. Mountains were highlighted by two side events at the UNFCCC COP 22 Marrakech conference. In collaboration with Slow Food, we launched a Mountain Products label that aims to improve the livelihoods and economies of mountain communities and started pilot projects in Bolivia, Cuba and Kyrgyzstan. The initiative generated a lot of interest in the media including the New York Times.
International Mountain Day was a huge success with celebrations held all over the world. This year's IMD theme "Mountain cultures celebrating diversity and strengthening identity" was celebrated in 43 countries with over 207 events. An editorial by René Castro Salazar, Assistant-Director General FAO, From peaks to tables: promoting the rich traditions and diversity of mountain cultures around the globe, was prepared and published in the following media:

The #MountainsMatter photo contest received over 340 photos from 57 countries. Below is the photo of the winner, Maryam Farzami of Afghanistan for her portrait of an Afghan mother holding her infant daughter.
We look forward to your continued collaboration and sustained support to improve the livelihoods of mountain peoples and protect mountain environments around the world going into 2017.
Sending you mountainous wishes for the holiday season!
