MessageDear Thomas,
Dear Mountain Pertnership,

Below You will find a short report on the celebrations of the IMD in Klodzko Valley, i.e. in Sudety Mountains.

The Mountain Elected People (AEM Pologne), The Snow Mountain Community Fund and The Association "Wojtowice - Back to the Future" organized for a group of mountain NGOs an electronic exchange of views on "Polish situation". It was animated by Ch. Komornicki, former MP for Sudety Mtns and C. Pogoda, former MP also from Klodzko Valley, who chaired a parliemantary subcommittee in charge of Mountain Law. The Law was vetoed by then Polish President A. Kwasniewski. From today`s perspective it looks - at least for the participants to our IMD debate - that the presidential veto did "no harm" to Polish mountains. Instead of leaving the matter in hands of Warsaw-based bureaucrates the mountain problems of today are being treated by regional authorities on the voivodie level. And they certainly know better !
During the exchange the participants received a copy of the Boguslaw Sonik`s letter addressed to AEM Pologne on the importance of " mountain sustainable development and joint actions undertaken by politicians, NGOs, scholars, local governments, students and other partners - in favour of mountains". B. Sonik elected from Cracow area to the European Parliament is chairing there an Intergroup in charge of mountains, islands and northernmost regions continuing the task of another celebrity - Luciano Caveri who before taking over the government of Aosta had founded a Parliamentary Mountain Group.
All three Wojtowice-based NGOs engaged themselves to continue their activities on the area of 12,5 ha that has been handed over to them for 26 years by the local government. The mission there is to establish a DEMO Centre of "good mountain practices" for NGOs, for regional mountain governments and for all mountain sympathisers.
We also managed to disseminate among the interested parties the information materials prepared for the occasion by the FAO. Everybody received the poster and the logo. Quite a few put them on their websites. The idea to "celebrate mountains as a whole - providing goods and services for all humankind" was appreciated. The map delivered to us among the IMD materials with missing Sudety Mtns, St. Cross Massif and Cracow Jura was not (appreciated). Hence (Thomas` favourite word !) our request to to the IMD organisers. please, draw another map.
We put dr Hofer on the screen and we listened to his address. Yes Thomas, let`s celebrate MOUNTAIN LIFE !

With my Best to You all...
Christopher Komornicki

Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as the "International Mountain Day". It is observed every year and is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to the world's mountains and highlands.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Mountains, FAO has undertaken a review of the International Mountain Day (IMD) concept in order improve its impact in raising a stronger awareness on the relevance of mountains worldwide. As such, rather than focusing on a specific theme, IMD 2012 aims to celebrate mountains as a whole drawing attention to the goods and services they provide for all humankind.

For this year's International Mountain Day we are pleased to announce a revamped tri-lingual website at the following address: http://www.fao.org/forestry/internationalmountainday/en/. Here you will find all this year's information material including a poster, four information fact sheets as well as the IMD logo in all the UN languages. The website also provides the fact sheets produced in collaboration with SDC, UNEP and regional Mountain Partnership members for RIO + 20.

Following this year's paperless approach we invite you to download the IMD materials, which are provided both in high and low resolution, and to make maximum use of them according to your needs and convenience for your own IMD celebration.

For any further information or specific questions related to this year's celebration, please contact Sara Manuelli ([log in to unmask]).

In the follow-up to the International Mountain Day 2012 please do not forget to send us a report about the celebrations of the Day in your country or institution. Also we would very much appreciate receiving feedback on the relevance and usefulness of the communication materials we have provided.

        Kind Regards
