Dear members and friends of the Mountain Partnership,

As the year comes to a close, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat wishes to thank all of you for rallying support for mountains and mountain people in 2019.

We have welcomed over 30 members this year, and look forward to working with each of you, new and old friends, in a spirit of engagement and collaboration.

Over the year, Mountain Partnership members have highlighted the progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in mountains, in particular during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1202192/> (HLPF) in New York with an event dedicated to building climate action in mountains.

The 12th IPROMO course<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1200411/>, held in July in Ormea and Pieve Tesino, Italy, was on the landscape approach in mountains, with topics ranging from the conservation of biodiversity to resilient watershed management to food security.

Participants from 18 countries attended the second edition of the Agrobiodiversity in a Changing Climate GROW Summer School<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/our-work/capacitydevelopment/summer-school-agrobiodiversity-in-a-changing-climate/course-2019/en/> at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Progress and recommendations on sustainable mountain development were the focus of the United Nations Secretary General Report<http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/mountain_partnership/docs/a_74_209_E.pdf> which the Mountain Partnership Secretariat together with MP members and relevant stakeholders compiled and submitted.

In September, during the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, USA, the Mountain Partnership Products (MPP) initiative<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/our-work/regionalcooperation/climate-change-and-mountain-forests/mountain-partnership-products-initiative/en/> was selected as one of 25 Best Practices<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/?dyna_fef%5buid%5d=1235213> out of 1 175 from around the world to be spotlighted at Expo 2020 Dubai's Global Best Practice Programme<https://www.expo2020dubai.com/en/programmes/best-practice-programme>.

Mountains had a strong presence at the 25th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 25), held from 2 to 13 December in Madrid, Spain. Many stakeholders came together to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on fragile mountain environments and communities. The Mountain Partnership supported four events<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1253828/> at the UNFCCC COP 25 including the International Mountain Day high-level event which was kicked off by FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu.

International Mountain Day (IMD) was a great success with celebrations held all over the world. This year's IMD theme #MountainsMatter for Youth was an occasion to highlight how young people are active agents of change and the future leaders. Over 60 events were held worldwide, including hikes, excursions, seminars, art exhibitions, student meetings, skype conferences and performances. Find some of the events here<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/imd-around-the-world/en/>.

The MPS/FAO co-organized "Music Moves Mountains", a series of events in Milan<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/events/international-mountain-day-2019-concert/en/>, Italy to celebrate International Mountain Day, including a panel discussion, video screenings and a concert dedicated to mountains by pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi. More than 1 400 people attended the concert at which Einaudi was appointed a Mountain Partnership Goodwill Ambassador by the FAO Forestry Assistant Director-General Hiroto Mitsugi.

Congratulations goes to the winner of the International Mountain Day photo and recipe contest, Ashmita Lama from the Sinja Valley in Nepal! Ashmita is value chain officer for Organic World and Fair Future, an eco-social company in Nepal and a member of the Mountain Partnership. The Jumla beans used in the recipe carry the Mountain Partnership Products label so we are particularly proud that she won the contest. The International Mountain Day recipe received over 70 entries from 27 countries. Find the entries here<https://www.flickr.com/photos/mountainpartnership/albums/72157711834280528>.

An infographic with key facts and figures about mountain peoples and environments and new data about the vulnerability to food insecurity of rural mountain people in developing countries was made available in the six UN official languages<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/information-material/en/>: Arabic<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779ar/CA6779AR.pdf>, Chinese<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779zh/CA6779ZH.pdf>, English<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779en/ca6779en.pdf>, French<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779fr/ca6779fr.pdf>, Russian<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779ru/CA6779RU.pdf> and Spanish<http://www.fao.org/3/ca6779es/ca6779es.pdf>.

More than 100 articles were published by major national and international news outlets. (see attached outreach). An editorial signed by Hiroto Mitsugi was published in:
