Call for entries: Tales of global warming in our mountains

Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

While many people in the world are under lockdown, this is the right time to reflect on nature, our relationship with the environment, and recount good stories to share our memories.
This is also the right time to try new and more narrative approaches to communicate how climate change is impacting the life of people living in mountains around the world. This is why we ask your support to collect tales from mountains that will be used creatively for a publication addressed to a broader audience. This initiative is promoted by an Italian writer, Francesco Casolo, a friend of the Mountain Partnership, and an author of many books on environmental issues and on mountains in particular.
We all know that mountains are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, so the way we communicate that urgent action is needed, is becoming increasingly crucial. Good storytelling can help achieve a number of goals: from raising awareness to inspiring people.
The purpose is to document how climate change is changing or has changed people’s life in mountains.
The Mountain Partnership Secretariat is supporting this initiative and invites you to submit stories related to global warming in your mountains to be included in a publication that will be published internationally. Francesco is not just asking for data, but rather anecdotes, stories, memories or experiences you have had or collected from family members, elderly people or close friends.
For example, if you tell a story about ice melting in Greenland, Francesco would like to know how this has impacted the local hunter, his family, the way he hunts and what he hunts now compared to how his ancestors did in the past and even what his dreams are for the future. Or observing recent developments of mountain agriculture on the Alps, he would like to know the background of these new farmers, whether they are just local people or people moving from cities, the way they settle themselves and the nature of their business.
Narratives you submit must show a cause-and-effect relationships between events that take place over a particular time period and what effect the event may have had on this particular character's life.
We ask to send your story in writing (500 words or less) and share your fascination, knowledge, memories, fears or hopes. Since global warming matters across generations, we welcome any creation, whether it will be a small child’s or an elder’s story. If your proposal will be accepted, your contribution will be acknowledge in the final publication. Feel free to send your stories in English, French, Spanish, German or Italian.
Please send your work directly to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> .
Many thanks,
Rosalaura
