Express your interest to participate in our Independent Dialogue on

“Mountains and sustainable food systems – Drivers of sustainable development”

by 12 May 2021

Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

In the framework of the UN Food Systems Summit 2021, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat will host an independent dialogue on 18 May from 15:00-18:00 CEST to discuss “Mountains and sustainable food systems – Drivers of sustainable development<https://summitdialogues.org/dialogue/9095/>.”

Mountain agriculture and food production sustain the livelihoods of 1.1 billion people living in the mountains and those of a much larger number of people in the lowlands that depend on healthy mountain ecosystems for freshwater and for the conservation of key plant and animal biological diversity.

Worldwide, more than 80 percent of all food is produced by small-scale farmers. Small-scale farmers and pastoralists are predominant in mountain regions, where generally harsh weather and limiting topographical conditions prevail.

Progress towards sustainable food systems cannot happen without improving the situation of small-scale mountain farmers worldwide. The dialogue aims to develop concrete and forward-looking solutions to address:

·       the disproportionately high level of food insecure people living in mountain areas;

·       sustainable food systems‘ role as drivers of mountain development due to their potential for small– and medium-sized enterprises, and their links with tourism and niche markets;

· the globally relevant ecosystem services and goods provided by mountains, such as water provision and regulation, erosion control and disaster risk reduction as well as biodiversity and agrobiodiversity conservation; and

· the need to discuss inclusive policies and governance systems in mountains and develop approaches that can create enabling environments for change.

Participation in the dialogue is by invitation only. If you have a strong interest in mountains and food systems and would like to participate, please write to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by 12 May. Spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

We look forward to hearing from you at the dialogue.

Best regards,

Rosalaura
