Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

On Thursday, 7 July at 7.30 am EST (New York time) / 1.30 pm CEST (Rome time), a side event organized by the Permanent Mission of the Principality of Andorra to the United Nations, with the support of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, will take place via Zoom.

This side event on mountains is organized within the framework of the Mountain Partnership<https://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership>, the Group of Friends of Mountainous Countries, and of the 2022 United Nations International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development<https://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/internationalyear2022/en/>, proclaimed to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable mountain development and the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems.

The main objectives for the side event are to:

  *   Promote action of governments for resilient, inclusive and sustainable mountain development in the main UN processes including the main Conventions.
  *   Advocate for policies to tackle biodiversity loss, the degradation of ecosystems and the effects of climate change in mountains in a world recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  *   Take stock of progress made towards the achievement of SDG target 15.4.
  *   Highlight the crucial role of education at all levels to promote sustainable mountain development.
The event is co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Andorra, Bhutan, Italy, the Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Peru, Uganda and Spain. A representative from the Aspen International Mountain Foundation will also present on the upcoming sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership.
