Dear members and friends of the Mountain Partnership,

The team at the Mountain Partnership Secretariat wishes to thank all of you for your commitment to raising the flag for mountains in 2018. We have welcomed over 30 members this year, including the Government of Papua New Guinea.

Congratulations to the winner of the #MountainsMatter photo competition, Salar Arkan from Iran!

Over the year, Mountain Partnership members have highlighted the progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in mountains, in particular during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1145590/> (HLPF) in New York. The 11th IPROMO course<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1143889/>, held in June in Ormea, Italy, focused on promoting bioeconomy in mountains areas as a way to implement the SDGs.

In collaboration with Slow Food, at Terra Madre<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1154029/> in Turin, Italy, MP members presented success stories from mountain producers who are increasing production and sales thanks to the Mountain Partnership Products label. The summer course “Agrobiodiversity in a changing climate<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1154648/>” organized at FAO reinforced the idea that sustainable production practices and the protection of agrobiodiversity not only improves nutrition, but also generates income for mountain smallholders.

Mountains were the theme of several side events at the UNFCCC COP 24 in Katowice, Poland, where MP members promoted an active communication campaign to request urgent climate action. Recommendations on sustainable mountain agriculture were endorsed in Bejing, China<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1165889/>, to share with Governments and relevant bodies. In November at FAO<http://www.fao.org/mountain-partnership/news/news-detail/en/c/1172629/>, 18 countries were trained to use the Mountain Green Cover Index in order to improve the monitoring of SDG Target 15.4.2.

International Mountain Day (IMD) was a great success with celebrations held all over the world. This year’s IMD theme #MountainsMatter was a call to action to raise attention to mountains and the role they play for all of us worldwide. By using the hashtag #MountainsMatter and joining the movement on social media, we invite you to show your support for mountains and help urge our politicians to address the plight of mountains and mountain peoples.

The International Mountain Day 2018 #MountainsMatter video was produced in several languages:
