Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

As you probably know mountains are mentioned in three targets under two of the 17 goals issued by the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals in its outcome document.

This result has been achieved thanks largely to your efforts.

Mountain Partnership members attended six events co-organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat with partners Argentina, Austria, Bhutan, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Peru, Romania from October 2013 to April 2014. You sent emails and letters to government representatives, made phone calls to diplomatic staff and attended Open Working Group sessions and side events. Your request to keep mountains on the international agenda for the next fifteen years has been heard by the OWG.

Here are the three targets that mention mountains:

6.6. by 2020 protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes

15.1. by 2020 ensure conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements

15.4. by 2030 ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, to enhance their capacity to provide benefits which are essential for sustainable development

There is more that we need to do.

These goals will be proposed to the next UN General Assembly in September 2014 and negotiations of the SDGs and the rest of the Post-2015 development agenda are expected to continue for up to a year. So, in the coming months, there should be numerous opportunities to advocate to recognize the importance of mountains to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the planet.

In addition to advocating to keep the three targets on mountains, two further additions could be suggested:

* a specific mention of "mountain development" to goal 15:
Proposed goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests and develop mountains, combat desertification, promote and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

* a means of implementation to finance reaching the targets such as:
15.b mobilize significant resources from all sources and at all levels to finance the sustainable development of mountains and enhance the livelihoods of mountain peoples.

We encourage you to continue those efforts up until the time the General Assembly adopts the SDGs and world priorities are set. There will be gatherings - the General Assembly, Climate Summit in September, UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Peru in December, to name just three - where UN Member States discuss the SDGs, and civil society can have a voice. Among the virtual platforms are "Beyond 2015" and "The World We Want", where civil society organizations can join the global conversation about development priorities.

Thank you for all that you have done. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat stands ready to support your advocacy activities. Let's continue our efforts up until the SDGs are adopted.

Best regards,

Thomas Hofer
Coordinator
Mountain Partnership Secretariat
