International Mountain Day 2013

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as "International Mountain Day". It is observed every year and FAO is the UN coordinating agency for the preparation of this annual celebration.

This year's International Mountain Day theme is Mountains: Key to a sustainable future, and it highlights how mountains provide resources such as freshwater, energy and food not only to the mountain people around the world, but to billions living downstream.

Click here<http://www.fao.org/news/audio-video/detail-video/en/?uid=10255> to watch Ms Maria Helena Semedo, FAO Deputy Director-General for Natural Resources, give a video message for this year's celebrations. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat/FAO, with financial support from the World Bank, has also produced an animated video on Mountains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71DmDxNbBJU

On our International Mountain day tri-lingual website (http://www.fao.org/forestry/internationalmountainday/en/) you will find all information tools including a poster, a fact sheet, the IMD logo in all the official UN languages, the IMD video in six languages as well as information on the events taking place around the world.

Don't forget to send us reports about the celebrations of the day in your country or institution - please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Happy celebrations!
