[cid:image002.png@01D23A90.95CB5C80][cid:image006.png@01D23A90.95CB5C80]Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

We are delighted to inform you of the Mountain Partnership and mountain-related side events taking place at UNFCCC COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco.

If you are in Marrakech, we invite you to attend these events. If you are not in Marrakech, please encourage your delegates to attend and participate.

Two side events organized within the framework of the Mountain Partnership:

Mapping and understanding mountains to achieve the 2030 Agenda
Friday 11 November, Pacific Room, Blue Zone; 13.15-14.45
Asociación Civil Oikos (OIKOS) and the Government of Guinea co-organized this official side event. The current development Agenda 2030 requires a better understanding of the effects of climate change among mountain communities and ecosystems. Further research, data collection and monitoring tools are needed to measure progress against the three SDG targets and promote investment. This event will share examples of ongoing activities, projects and programmes. Keys speakers include representatives from FAO, Guinea, OIKOS, The Mountain Institute (TMI) and UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme and the International Climate Initiative (IKI). See the event agenda<http://www.mountainpartnership.org/fileadmin/templates/mountain_partnership/doc/News/MP-agenda1_final.pdf>.

The impact of climate change in mountain areas. A priority for a global action
Monday 14 November, Bering Room, Blue Zone; 13.15-14.45
The Government of Andorra, the Government of Pakistan and TMI co-organized this official side event. Vulnerable mountain ecosystems are critical for global fresh water. Covering 22 percent of all land, mountains are home to over 900 million people, many impoverished, food insecure and lacking resilience. This event will review needs and mechanisms for addressing climate change in mountains under the UNFCCC. Keys speakers include representatives from TMI, the World Meteorological Organization, and the Governments of Andorra, Colombia, Italy, Pakistan and FAO. See the event agenda<http://www.mountainpartnership.org/fileadmin/templates/mountain_partnership/doc/News/MP-agenda2_final.pdf>.

Two side events addressing mountain-related topics:

Biocultural heritage-based innovations for climate resilient food systems: Lessons and best practices
Tuesday 15 November, Auditorium, Indigenous Pavilion; 14.30-16.30
Co-organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Asociación ANDES (Peru), Centre for Chinese Agricultural Policy, TMI, United Nations Environment Programme International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this event will explore the role of indigenous knowledge and biocultural heritage-based innovations in climate resilient agriculture, and highlight their role in mitigation. It will present the findings of the SIFOR project (Smallholder Innovation for Resilience), including key trends and innovations in mountain communities in Peru, China and India, and coastal communities in Kenya. Successful innovations for enhancing productivity and market linkages will be explored, notably those of the Potato Park (Peru), and Participatory Plant Breeding and Community Supported Agriculture in Southwest China. Relevant findings and lessons from the Mountain EbA Flagship Project will also be presented; along with mechanisms for scaling out successful innovations, such as the International Network on Mountain Indigenous Peoples (INMIP), and UNEP's South-South collaboration initiative. A panel of experts will explore how traditional knowledge and the needs of mountain countries and communities can be better addressed in the post-Paris policy process. See the event agenda<http://www.mountainpartnership.org/fileadmin/templates/mountain_partnership/doc/News/SIFOR_side_event_flyer_Nov2016_for_email.pdf>.

Scaling up water and agriculture climate sensitive investments in mountain regions
Tuesday 15 November, Souss, Green Zone; 15.00-16.30
This event was organized by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation. While climate finance has slowly started to flow, it needs to scale up rapidly and support the most vulnerable communities who are already experiencing the impacts of climate change. In Bolivia for example, climate change is increasingly challenging livelihood systems in mountain regions, changing the productivity patterns of subsistence farming and reducing access to water resources, among others. Public investments in water and agriculture need to integrate climate change considerations and disaster risk reduction strategies in decision making and planning. The session will present the climate risk reduction potentials of watershed and rural infrastructure projects as also a decision support tool to assess the cost benefit of investing in risk reduction measures using the metric of 'avoided costs'. See the event agenda<http://www.mountainpartnership.org/fileadmin/templates/mountain_partnership/doc/News/Final_Agenda_Scaling_up_side_event.pdf>.

We look forward to meeting you in Marrakech.
