Happy International Mountain Day 2017!

Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger and migration

Dear Mountain Partnership members and friends,

Today we wave the mountain flag high for mountain peoples and ecosystems around the world.

This year's International Mountain Day<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/en/> theme is "Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger and migration" to raise awareness about how the effects of climate change will impact food security and migration patterns in mountains.

The day is an opportunity to reflect upon the plight of mountain peoples, among the hungriest of the world, and the role that mountains play in the sustainable development of our planet. Almost one billion people live in mountain areas, and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation, over exploitation and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, both for mountain communities and the rest of the world.

Coinciding with International Mountain Day, the fifth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership is taking place at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, where more than 150 representatives from mountainous countries, intergovernmental organizations and civil society will endorse concrete measures and policies to strengthen the resilience of mountain people and environments in the face of climate change. A Framework for Action is being launched to support concrete actions, put in place long-lasting processes, and establish policies to strengthen the resilience of mountain peoples and environments to ensure that sustainable mountain development is integrated into the 2030 Agenda and in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

A poster and fact sheet - available for download here<http://www.fao.org/international-mountain-day/information-material/en/> in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish - have been developed along this year's International Mountain Day theme. The fact sheet features three case studies from Mountain Partnership member organizations.

On International Mountain Day, we invite you to participate in the global efforts to conserve and sustainably use mountain resources, ensuring that global sustainable development reaches even the highest peaks so that no one is left behind. Mountains matter. Join us to make this message heard.

Please do not forget to send news and pictures of the events your organizations and institutions hold - please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Happy celebrations!
