Dear friends of the Mountain Partnership,

As communicated to you on 25  July by Mr Eduardo Mansur, Director Forest Assessment, Management and Conservation Division of FAO’s Forestry Department, I assumed the task of Interim Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat as of today. It is a pleasure and honor to work with all of you. Together with the entire team in the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, I will do my best to live up to the expectations. And please allow me to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to my predecessors, Doug McGuire and Olman Serrano, for their excellent work during the last ten years.

2012 is a strategic year for mountains: we take stock of the achievements 20 years after the 1st Rio Conference, which gave birth to Chapter 13 (Sustainable Mountain Development) in Agenda 21. The celebration of the International Year of Mountains 2002 and the creation of the Mountain Partnership were milestone events during that period. The fact that sustainable mountain development gets prominent attention in the outcome document of Rio+20 is a clear indicator of success, to which all of you have significantly contributed through local, national, regional and global initiatives. But it is also a significant responsibility and a call to the global community to continue and increase its attention to sustainable mountain development in order to address the current and future challenges.

2012 is also a period of renewal in the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS). We would like to capitalize on the important achievements of the last ten years, during which the attention to mountains and mountain people has considerably increased at international, regional and national levels. The membership has recognized that it is the right moment to critically review the current strategy of the Mountain Partnership (MP), based on the achievements and lessons learned since its creation. It has also been recognized that it is time to strengthen the governance structure of the MP by making it more inclusive and participatory. This process was launched in the context of the preparations for Rio+20 and during the Rio Conference itself, but it needs further reflection, discussion and refinement. We hope that by February 2013 the MP will be fully operational and supported by a new governance structure agreed upon by all. We will keep you regularly informed
about the progress we are making.

We very much look forward to working with you and we thank you very much for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Thomas
