Dear Colleagues,
The latest contributions to this online discussion<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/discussions/social-protection-forestry> are focusing on the best ways to protect and promote the livelihood of forest-dependent people.
Some think that it's better to support forest dependent people by offering them opportunities to take advantage of forest resources in commercial endeavors and propose to give legal guarantees of ownership of the forests to the communities directly dependent on them. Others draw attention to the role social protection can have in preventing detrimental risk coping strategies of vulnerable households, such as illegal logging.
Contributions by Mafa Chipeta from Malawi, Maja Gavrilovic from FAO, Italy, Nyasha Tirivayi from UNU-MERIT, Netherlands and Solomon Mkumbwa, United Nations Human Settlements Programme, Kenya, are available on the FSN Forum website. <http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/discussions/social-protection-forestry>
We look forward to more comments on this challenging topic and would be interested in hearing about any social protection programme targeted at forest-dependent people you may know about. Are there programmes that aim at promoting sustainable forestry or that are integrated with sustainable forest management?
