Dear Members,
We would like to thank this week's participants, listed below, who shared their comments on the zero draft Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management. <http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/discussions/soilguidelines>
Members interested in soils are invited to contribute to the drafting process of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (VGSSM).
The Status of the World’s Soil Resources report identified ten major threats to our soils that need to be addressed if we are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Urgent efforts must be made to enable and engage with sustainable soil management at all levels. Achieving sustainable soil management will generate large benefits for all, therefore the availability of comprehensive Guidelines on Sustainable Soil Management is of major importance.
Comments are welcome both on the questions proposed in the topic note, available in English<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/discussions/soilguidelines>, French<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/fr/forum/discussions/soilguidelines> and Spanish,<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/es/forum/discussions/soilguidelines> and directly on the draft document which can be found online.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Your FSN Forum team

[cid:image003.png@01D16B2A.C9B42580]Theodor Friedrich, FAO, Cuba
Theodor congratulates the Global Soil Partnership for drafting the guidelines and opening up the process for consultation. He highlights that the document is written from a point of view “before sustainable intensification”, i.e. with an agricultural paradigm accepting soil tillage as necessary practice and soil degradation as unavoidable consequence. Conservation Agriculture should have more space in the document.
Theodor also shares FAO's Policy Support Guideliner for the Promotion of Sustainable Production Intensification and Ecosystem Services <http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/sites/default/files/resources/CA-policy%20book.pdf> as a useful reference.
Please read Theodor's first comments here<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/contributions/re-online-consultation-developing-voluntary-guidelines-sustainable-soil-manag-12> and his second one here<http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/forum/contributions/re-online-consultation-developing-voluntary-guidelines-sustainable-soil-manag-13>

[cid:image003.png@01D16B2A.C9B42580]Floria Bertsch, Asociación Costarricense de la Ciencia del Suelo, Costa Rica
Floria suggests more focus to be placed on the actual guidelines, in particular chapter 3.

[cid:image003.png@01D16B2A.C9B42580]Lal Manavado, University of Oslo affiliate, Norway
Lal commends the draft guidelines and draws attention to what may be called "ruins of soil" such as abandoned strip mines, forests destroyed by uncontrolled logging, advancing desert etc., which are often contiguous to arable lands.
