Dear Members,

Today we share with you a brief recap of the online discussion “Food Security and Nutrition in APEC Economies. Sharing lessons learned and looking into the future<http://bit.ly/1MZIgh7>”, which has so far attracted 44 comments.

This discussion invites food security practitioners to share views on how food security can be improved in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies<http://www.apec.org/> and beyond.

· How can smallholder farmers benefit from global value chains?

· What are the challenges for policy implementation in your country related to food security research?

· How can we ensure the participation of youth in the wider food security dialogue?

· What is the most striking example of measures that have improved food security and nutrition in your country in the last decade?

The exchange complemented the APEC Food Security Training and Workshop hosted by the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences in Beijing on September 7-9, 2015.

The conference brought together young researchers of APEC economies to enhance their research capacities on food security issues. A summary of the presentations and the discussion sessions will be made available on the FSN Forum soon.

You will find the topic introduction and the questions proposed on the website in English<http://bit.ly/1MZIgh7>, French<http://bit.ly/1NUMIhQ>, Spanish<http://bit.ly/1XalfwB> and Chinese<http://bit.ly/1USWIrV>. Please send your comments in any of these four languages to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> or post them online on the discussion page.

We look forward to receiving your comments!

How can smallholder farmers benefit from global value chains?

· Consolidating plots and farms into larger businesses can help in accessing value chains.

· Organizing into cooperatives can increase the bargaining power of smallholder farmers.

· It is necessary to help smallholder farmers comply with international rules and standards.

· Women need to be encouraged and empowered to have a greater role in farming activities.

· Facilitating the linkage between farmers, intermediaries and consumers is of paramount importance.

· Smallholder farmers in developing countries need to be linked to profitable markets worldwide.

· Smallholders need to be supported in their willingness to upgrade and adopt new technology.

· Countries in transition need to complete their move toward a market economy in order to allow smallholders to access global value chains.

· Extension services need to be strengthened in order to properly support smallholders.

· Farmers need access to credit to be able to invest and innovate (and need to have the necessary collaterals).

· Increase consumer concern in developed countries for farmers facing poverty.

· Smallholder farmers need to be part of plan/program/policy making processes.

· Agricultural and agro-processing companies and rural advisory services can support farmers in pre-chain to meet required standards.

What are the challenges for policy implementation in your country related to food security research?

· The drive for self-sufficiency practiced in some countries can conflict with a sustainable use of natural resources.

· Information given to farmers needs to be relevant to the local conditions.

· The gap between entrepreneurial farming and family farming can widen.

· Food losses and waste throughout the supply chains creates inefficiencies.

· It is imperative that gains from trade are distributed amongst all players (including farmers) in a more equitable manner than is happening currently.

How can we ensure the participation of youth in the wider food security dialogue?

· Ensure the early introduction of the concepts of food security and nutrition into school curricula.

· It is necessary to make agriculture and rural activities more attractive to young people.

· Use modern channels such as social media to engage the youth.

· Youth needs to see agriculture as an innovative activity that can provide them a promising future.

· Setup mechanisms to attract particularly talented young people into the primary sector and affiliated industries.
