Each year, the Activity Group 3 under the Working Group on Capacity Building (WGCB) holds a regional capacity building event. In October of this year, the
6th GBEP Bioenergy Week was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event gathered over 170 participants from four continents.

The GBEP Annual Meetings are an opportunity for GBEP Partners and Observers to gather in order to discuss the activities of the year and devise a work plan
for the year ahead. This year, they were held 27-29 November 2018 in Rome, Italy and included the 10th meeting of the Working Group on Capacity Building
(WGCB), the 16th meeting of the Taskforce on Sustainability (TFS) and the 21st meeting of the Steering Committee.

The FORBIO (Fostering Sustainable Feedstock Production for Advanced Biofuels on underutilized land in Europe) Project gave stakeholders in Italy, Germany and Ukraine a strategy for the market uptake of sustainable advanced bioenergy value chains. Through a thorough assessment of the real sustainable potential for bioenergy in these countries, the project contributes to meeting the mandate of the European Renewable Energy Directive II.

The recent project funded by GIZ in Togo and Ghana, in collaboration with ECREEE, aimed to build or enhance existing capacities of local stakeholders in both countries to understand, assess and implement the GBEP sustainability indicators and use them to inform bioenergy policy decision making.

According to the IEA report of 2018, the global renewable energy consumption increased by more than 5% in 2017 and the share of renewable technologies meeting global energy demand is expected to increase by a fifth, reaching 12.4% in 2023. In this year's report one of the main focuses lays on modern bioenergy, an energy source often being overshadowed by the more popular and omnipresent solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy.
