Dear Partners and Observers,
As you may recall, the GBEP Secretariat team in FAO, in a Consortium with 12 partners from Europe and Ukraine, has been implementing an Horizon 2020 project (EU funded) in the last 3 years (end date is 31 October 2021).
The project, called BIOPLAT<https://bioplat.eu/>-EU, has the objective to promote sustainable bioenergy in Europe using marginal, underutilized, and contaminated lands (MUC lands) for non-food biomass production, through the development and use of a web-GIS platform that serves as decision support tool. The linkages of this project with GBEP has always been very strong as all the sustainability assessments and considerations of this project have used the GBEP Sustainability Indicators as a reference.
We are organizing an ONLINE International Workshop that will take place on Monday 27 September 2021, from 13.00 to 17.30 CEST time, aiming for participation of the GBEP colleagues, with a view to present the results of the project focusing on the development and the demonstration of the webGIS Tool<https://bioplat.eu/webgis-tool> which is a tool that allows users to search for MUC lands in Europe, to select a suitable crop and bioenergy pathway and conduct sustainability assessments including GHG emissions, water footprint, impacts on employment and much more. Please consult the AGENDA of the event here<https://bioplat.eu/news/44/the-final-bioplat-eu-workshop-is-organised-as-hybrid-event> and REGISTER here<https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9HWh61EKQo-JuBoQ-je9nQ>. After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link to join the event.
We are keenly aware that the GBEP indicators have been flexible enough to allow for different type of application and this project and the implemented WEBGIS tool is a concrete example of this.
We very much look forward to meeting you virtually at this International Workshop,
Michela and the GBEP team
