Dear colleagues,

Thank you for the valuable contributions to Week 2 of the PUI Consultation.

The technical nature of the topics at hand has somehow limited the amount of detailed feedback, but what we have taken note of the wide support to DOIs as the most promising Permanent Unique Identifier for GLIS. This conclusion is derived from the analysis of the scoring tables that we have compiled (attached) and from the general comments received from Elizabeth and Ruth. I would like to thanks in particular Dag, Éamonn and Marco for compiling the table and providing not only the scoring, but also for their comments, which are of help for all of us.

Regarding the issue of costs and maintenance, which was identified last week as a potential limiting factor to the adoption of DOIs, this Secretariat will now investigate with the International DOI Foundation and other DOI Registration Agencies, potential arrangements to make them both effective and cost-saving. As soon as we get any relevant information we will share it with you.

One topic that has emerged during the discussion is the need to provide clear and accurate guidance on how DOI will be used in the context of GLIS. As David and Sarah mentioned this week, and others the week before, there is the need to provide a detailed definition of the scope of the identifiers and, ideally, to have very precise descriptions of how they are to be used and how the operations of the Multilateral System of the International Treaty can help to adopt them.

We agree with you that a sound metadata description would be critical to promote accurate identification of entities and proper assignment of DOIs to their various transformation stages. We therefore encourage all of you to participate in the discussion of Week 3 that will open shortly.

Thank you.
Regards,
Treaty Secretariat
