Dear colleagues,
Thank you very much for your participating in week 3. This week’s discussion has been very dynamic and I would like to thank you for your valuable inputs and recommendations.
The discussion started with six questions but your comments focused more on a) identification of PGRFA material and disambiguation, c) model PGRFA interactions through a minimum set of relation operators and e) accommodate existing identifiers.
On question “a) Identification” we have discussed and listed some useful descriptors for DOIs to help to identify entities and to disambiguate them. It is to be noted that no PUID alone may solve forever the issue of duplicates, but it may help to find useful relations between the PGRFA material being conserved and transferred at global level. We have agreed that applying DOIs to PGRFA may help the community identify the material in a more granular way, possibly including references to biological status, regeneration and propagation status.
Regarding “c) Model PGRFA interactions” we had some preliminary discussions on how current metadata descriptors may help us to model meaningful relations through the association and the use of existing germplasm ontologies. However, further work on how metadata should be used with DOIs should be explored in this concrete area.
For “e) Existing identifiers” we agreed that DOIs will not replace accession numbers, but will complement them, as well as any other local identifiers like “collecting number”, or ARK and LSID if they are already associated to the PGRFA being registered in GLIS.
It has been discussed that GLIS has also to help to discover and link germplasm associated data and that the Multilateral System may offer a good opportunity for testing, at least as a starting point. Data curation has been agreed to remain with the PGRFA holder and that using GLIS should be as hassle free as possible, with no infrastructure to be developed by the data curators and without direct financial implications for the registration. We have also recognised that some sort of centralization is unavoidable in order to provide some of these services.
Projects, initiatives and organizations undertaking useful research work relevant to GLIS development have been indicated and we will proceed to contact them to explore potential collaboration options.
In the coming days we will be circulating a summary of the three-week discussions. Additionally, and based on the need to further elaborate some of the ideas shared this week, I will circulate a proposal of metadata to be associated with DOIs and on practical tests of DOIs with holders of PGRFA material in a pilot project.
We would like to thank you, once more, for your contributions. We think that we have all learned from each other and we look forward to working with you in the future on this interesting topic. In the meantime, you can contact the Treaty Secretariat at [log in to unmask] with any update or information to be shared.
Thank you.
Regards,
Treaty Secretariat
