Dear Fatimata,
FAO has done some work on this in the past, probably this could be helpful. The link to this page is: http://www.fao.org/docrep/t9450e/t9450e04.htm#1.1 The consumption of wild animals

Thanks.

Subject: Bushmeat in rural sub-Saharan African diets

Dear Colleagues

Here in Mali, there is a great deal of discussion about bushmeat consumption. This is largely generated by the Ebola epidemic. (We know that the first transmission is animal-human, but afterwards the epidemic is wholly driven by human to human transmission.)

The Ebola campaign is asking people to not eat bushmeat, but we are concerned that this would eliminate an important source of nutrients and calories in a country with very high rates of anemia and malnutrition.

Is there any data out there on the proportions of bushmeat in the rural sub-African diet (particularly in West Africa) and its nutritional value?

Thank you for your assistance.

Fatimata Ouattara
