Dear all,

I have noticed that for a number of FCDB compilers, there is an increasing need to include more brand names into the national databases and the same applies to Estonia. However, the regular process of inserting new product data - trying to match the nutrient values in the database to those on the product label, using recipe calculation – is often very difficult and time-consuming. (At this point, I would like to thank Susanne W. and Anders M. who addressed the problem in this list at the beginning of May by discussing the use of specialized software.)

However, in order to simplify and accelerate the data exchange with the food industry I understand that several compiler organizations also already have an online platform where the product data can be inserted by the industry representatives themselves. The data is then forwarded to the database compilers for further evaluation and customization, if needed.

As we have started creating a similar platform, I would be very grateful for any tips, guidelines or experiences regarding cooperation with the industry and/or the aforementioned platform.

For example:

·         Nutrient values only vs recipe calculation based on the ingredients (incl. any rules on confidentiality) – how much is the industry willing to share?

·         Other technical details or necessary functionalities regarding the platform – what should one keep in mind?

·         Incentives for using the platform, motivation in general – what does the industry gain from the cooperation (incl. best practises so far)?

I understand that this is quite a wide topic. However, I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences in this field, if you are willing to share them.

Kind regards,

Ann Jõeleht
