The multiple dimensions of food security

The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2013<http://bit.ly/16xiuZI> presents updated estimates of undernourishment and progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets. The latest assessment shows that further progress has been made towards the 2015 MDG target

The 2013 report goes beyond measuring food deprivation. It presents a broader suite of indicators that aim to capture the multidimensional nature of food insecurity, its determinants and outcomes.

Drawing on the suite of indicators, the report also examines the diverse experiences of six countries in more detail, finding a mixed picture of progress and setbacks.

FAO-Government project to intensify agriculture pays off for female farmers in Niger

In trying to improve agricultural productivity, IARBIC has promoted innovative micro-financing schemes to provide smallholders with what they so painfully lack: money. The project is supporting an inventory credit system known as 'warrantage', under which farmers, rather than selling at harvest time when prices are low, stock part of the harvest and use it as collateral to obtain credit from a bank.

In Danja, Niger<http://bit.ly/1ak11Z7> farmers' organizations run by women have managed to enhance their incomes and yields using this micro-finance scheme.

Using the loan money, the women have been engaging in income generating activities by producing peanut oil to sell to the local market. Others raise feeders for sale. The revenues come as a welcome addition to their household income and can also be used to buy seeds and fertilizer for the next planting season.

Managing cassava virus diseases in Africa: The Regional Cassava Initiative

Cultivated mainly on marginal lands by small-scale farmers, cassava is an inexpensive and essential part of the diet of vulnerable communities across Africa. Millions of people depend on the crop. Two virus diseases are now threatening the cassava production in East and Central Africa.

With funding from the European Union, the Regional Cassava Initiative was rolled out to support smallholders and to prevent further spread of the diseases. Over 100,000 households benefited from the project, strengthening the livelihoods of 500,000 people.

Seven countries are currently involved in this project (Burundi<http://bit.ly/17gQZtr>, Central African Republic<http://bit.ly/1a9q9np>, Democratic Republic of Congo<http://bit.ly/1a2rE0s>, Gabon<http://bit.ly/H43sUQ>, Rwanda<http://bit.ly/16vdk5K>, Tanzania<http://bit.ly/1ifJhiu> and Uganda<http://bit.ly/HgKkUu>).

Kenya's ASALs, the Emerging Frontier for Opportunities and Development

The government of Kenya<http://bit.ly/165TyeW> is ready to collaborate with different stakeholders in building capacities and enabling marginalized communities in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) of Kenya to break away from poverty.

ASALs constitute approximately 80% of Kenya's land mass and are home to about 20% of Kenya's population. Nearly 60% of national livestock and wildlife population are raised here. The counties with the highest levels of poverty against most human development indicators are in the arid lands. The ecosystems are most vulnerable due to climate change thus compounding development challenges.
