MEDIA ADVISORY
International Symposium: The Future of Food
10-11 June 2019, FAO Rome
Malnutrition in all its forms is one of the greatest challenges facing us today. While hunger persists in some countries, we are witnessing across the globe, an unprecedented rise in obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases. We urgently need to transform our food systems to provide the healthy diets needed for optimal health and wellbeing while at the same time addressing issues of social inequality and the depletion of our natural resources within the context of climate change.
Food and agriculture must move towards the path of sustainability - achieving more with less and producing safe and nutritious food for all.
The international symposium: Future of Food, on 10-11 June 2019 at FAO in Rome<http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/future-of-food/en/>, will focus on these issues by bringing together academics, researchers, policy makers, representatives from civil society and the private sector, parliamentarians and government agencies.
Media are invited to attend the event which will also be webcast<http://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/>.
FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva will open the Symposium which will include four panel discussions:
1. Research, Knowledge Gaps and Needs for Sustainable Food Systems and Healthy Diets
2. Governance of food systems for healthy diets
3. Building Consumer Confidence in Food Systems
4. Transforming Food Systems: What does it take?
The programme<http://www.fao.org/3/ca4967en/ca4967en.pdf> also includes a High Level Event on the Mediterranean Diet on 11 June.
A Facebook Live<https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO/> stream will be held on 10 June 2019, at 1 p.m. Rome time (GMT+2). Speakers include: Maximo Torero, FAO Assistant Director-General for Economic and Social Development, Marion Nestle, New York University and David Nabarro, World Food Prize laureate.
