Press conference - New FAO report on environmental consequences of food waste
Study looks at impacts on climate, land, water and biodiversity – on farms, at markets, and in the kitchen
On Wednesday 11 September at 10:30h CET FAO will present a new report detailing the environmental impacts of food wastage.
Each year, 1.3 billion tonnes of food are lost or wasted, either during production and processing or at the retailer/consumer level. The water, land and other natural resources used to produce this food also go wasted – while greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere during food production, processing, and cooking.
FAO’s new report, The Food Wastage Footprint – Impacts on Natural Resources, is the first study to focus specifically on the environmental repercussions of food wastage.
A companion publication, Toolkit: Reducing the Food Wastage Footprint, will also be presented. It contains recommendations for action and examples from around the globe of how the food waste problem is being addressed.
