Event at FAO aims to spark renewed global effort to better manage droughts

International Seminar: "Drought & Agriculture: Predict, Plan, Prepare: Stop Drought Becoming Famine"

In recent months the cascading effects of drought have devastated the livelihoods of farmers across Africa and raised the spectre of famine in Somalia.
No corner of the globe is immune. Improving how the international community manages and responds to drought has never been more imperative than it is today.
That is why the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and FAO are convening an international seminar in Rome next week that will bring experts and policymakers from around the globe together in a bid to kick-start a renewed international focus on drought.
Putting theory into practice
There is no shortage of knowledge, technologies, and good practices for addressing drought, water shortages, and their implications for food security, agriculture, and rural development.
But what is needed is a global approach to harness and deploy this knowledge - and strong partnerships to put it into play.

·         José Graziano da Silva, Director-General, FAO

·         John Mutorwa, Minister for Agriculture, Water and Forestry of Namibia

·         Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

·         Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, President of IFAD

·         Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan will deliver a video message.
Other participants in multiple break-out sessions will include experts from the academic, science, humanitarian, and policymaking communities.
During the seminar FAO will also present a new report looking at drought management and the possible impacts of climate change on water resources in Central Asia and Turkey.

The event will conclude with a final communique by the event co-chairs.
Webcasting<http://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/> will allow those not able to attend to follow. Simultaneous translation into Arabic, English, French and Spanish will be provided.
The seminar coincides with the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (17 June).
