World Food Week 2019

*         Launch of State of Food and Agriculture report, 14 October

This year's World Food Week (14-18 October) takes place in a global context of rising hunger but also of increasing overweight and obesity, and growing concerns over the impacts of food loss and waste.

A series of events, including World Food Day on 16 October, will explore actions needed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 - Zero Hunger. World Food Day is marked each year on 16 October to commemorate FAO's founding in 1945.

Launch of the State of Food and Agriculture report (SOFA 2019)
Monday, 14 October at 12.00, Sheikh Zayed Centre, FAO
This year's edition provides new estimates of the world's food that is being lost from production up to the retail level. It also offers a comprehensive analysis of the critical loss in specific supply chains, and examples on appropriate measures for an effective reduction. The report will be presented at a press conference with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu (@FAODG<https://twitter.com/FAODG>) and Assistant Director-General for Economic and Social Development Maximo Torero (@MaximoTorero<https://twitter.com/MaximoTorero>).

Opening of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS)
Monday, 14 October at 10.00, Plenary Hall, FAO
The CFS is the leading international platform for policy coherence and convergence on food security and nutrition. CFS sessions (14-18 October) are focused on various themes, including: agroecology, employment in food systems for youth and women. The opening ceremony will include speeches by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu (@FAODG<https://twitter.com/FAODG>) and the CFS Chair Mario Arvelo (@MarioArvelo<https://twitter.com/MarioArvelo>). Accredited journalists can also attend over 50 side-events<http://www.fao.org/cfs/home/plenary/cfs46/cfs46se/en/> including one<http://www.fao.org/cfs/home/plenary/cfs46/cfs46se/se129/en/> (17 October) on reducing the risks of antimicrobial resistance to food systems.

World Food Day (WFD)
Wednesday, 16 October at 9.15, Plenary Hall, FAO
This year's World Food Day highlights the need to make healthy diets available and affordable to all. With events in some 150 countries and under the slogan "Our actions are our future. Healthy diets for a #ZeroHunger world", FAO and its WFD partners call for faster and more ambitious action across sectors to achieve SDG2 - Zero Hunger.

At the global ceremony at FAO, speakers will include the Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte (@GiuseppeConteIT<https://twitter.com/GiuseppeConteIT>), FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu (@FAODG<https://twitter.com/FAODG>), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) President Gilbert F. Houngbo (@GHoungbo<https://twitter.com/GHoungbo>) and World Food Programme Executive Director David M. Beasley (@WFPChief<https://twitter.com/wfpchief>). Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security from a number of countries will also speak at the event.

FAO is also hosting a Special Event featuring a lecture by
Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs (@JefferySachs<https://twitter.com/JefferySachs>).

The lecture will focus on food, agriculture and sustainable development.
A World Food Day exhibit showcasing facts, figures, actions, stories and recipes for healthier diets and healthier lives will be launched by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu (@FAODG<https://twitter.com/FAODG>) at 14:30, Atrium.

Please send an email to [log in to unmask], specifying the dates and events you wish to attend. A separate pass is required for each day. Please include scanned copies of a valid press card or letter of assignment on company stationery and a copy of a valid ID (passport, identity card).  You must have all ID materials with you to gain access to FAO premises.
Please note: Accreditation requests received after the deadline cannot be accepted.
