Briefing: How many people worldwide now face acute hunger?
Findings of new report will be presented to governments 22 March in Rome
New numbers on how many people are facing acute hunger worldwide and will be affected by worsening food insecurity in the coming months will be presented on Thursday, 22 March 2018, at the launch of the annual Global Report on Food Crises.
Throughout Africa, the Middle East and in parts of South Asia, conflict and insecurity are undermining food security. Likewise, persistent drought in the Horn of Africa, floods in Asia, and hurricanes in Latin America and the Caribbean have all contributed to the spread and intensification of hunger.
Complex crises are increasingly determined by conflict, extreme climatic shocks and high prices of staple foods, often acting in combination.
How many people are now facing acute hunger, a state of food insecurity so severe that there is an immediate threat to their lives or livelihoods? How many people are expected to be in a situation of protracted food insecurity?
These and other findings from the report will be presented by the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
The Global Report is part of a wider initiative, the Global Network Against Food Crises, aimed at enhancing the impact of future responses to food crises at the global level by regularly producing, in real time, joint reports based on key analyses.
Media are invited to attend the 22 March briefing. The event will also be webcast<http://www.fao.org/webcast/en/> live.
